The
Enrichment Centers' Chinese language program focuses on both
written and spoken Chinese. Qualified instructors emphasize
immediate and total immersion in the language and culture.
Using visual stimuli, gestures, and role-playing, instructors
create a lively and encouraging classroom environment that
enhances the learning process. In order to help facilitate
the learning of Chinese characters, our teachers teach the
origin of common pictographic components or radicals which
a Chinese character may be broken into. Classes are located
in Virginia (Arlington County) and Maryland (Prince George's
and Montgomery counties).
Chinese
Program Developer Lia Phipps has brought her understanding
of language and culture to the language curriculum. Educated
in China and in the U.S., Ms. Phipps studied Chinese Literature
at Wellesley College and at the School of Oriental and African
Studies at the University of London. She has worked as a translator
at the National Palace Museum in Taipei, Taiwan, and has taught
in Taipei and Tokyo.
