Mysteries of Physics

We offer this class for a variety of age levels. For the curriculum below, we recommend a background of algebra and an introduction to physical science.

In this 1-week class, we will review the basic structure of mathematical physics and show how it can be used to analyze everyday objects like slinkies, baseballs, and the planet Earth. Also, we will explore the groundbreaking discoveries of modern physics and how they affect everything in our world from the largest galaxies to the smallest atoms. On the last day of the class, we will tour the National Air and Space Museum to see how physics can be applied to solve problems and create new technology. Emphasis will be placed throughout on conceptual understanding.

Tentative Schedule:

Day 1

Newtonian Mechanics (Or How to Stand on the Shoulders of Giants)

Day 2
Pulleys, Yoyos, and Hanging Things: The Physics of Toys and Simple Machines

Day 3

“It’s All Relative” and Other Lies About Modern Physics

Day 4

Democritus’s Revenge: A Brief History of the Atom

Day 5

Real Life Application: The National Air and Space Museum (Excursion)

Instructor:
